Marking a Shell for an Oval Hinge Ring1) Select an egg shell that is close to being the same size at both ends. Most egg shells are narrower at one end, but you can fill in the gaps with braid, cord, rhinestone chain, or lining on the inside. 2) Mark the exact center top and bottom. 3) Divide the egg in half from top to bottom. This will help get the ring level. 4) Make a template out of a piece of file folder by drawing around the outside of the hinge ring with a sharp pencil. Cut just inside the line you drew. Slip the template opening over the egg, making sure it is level. (Refer to your line in step 3.) Tape the template level and draw around the opening. Mark a vertical line so you can match the cuts "eggsactly" when epoxying the hinge ring to the egg. Remember, the egg shell keeps changing shape around the curves, so the hinge ring will have a better fit on the lower edge rather than on the upper edge. ![]() |
